DRAKE’S ISLAND – SINGLE REVIEW

Drake’s Island – Only Passing Through
Drake's Island - Only Passing Through

Release Date: Out Now

This is the debut release from Plymouth supergroup Drake’s Island, a band named after a largely abandoned island off the coast of Britain’s Ocean City. That sense of abandonment and sparse landscape is front and centre on ‘Only Passing Through’, a track dripping in ambient soundscapes and meandering electric guitar licks. The vocals grow from atmospheric and dark to a sense of gritted teeth frustration as the talented trio of Jamie Yost, Fergus Tanner and Olly Parker build this tune intricately over its five minute life span. As singles go, it’s a grower more than an immediate hit but I don’t think for one minute that these guys are interested in doing anything with the idea of shifting units in mind. This is organic music that has to grow naturally and any interventions would only damage its beauty – one to take your time over.
