Canadian trio Ace of Wands are
back with new single ‘Lioness’ ahead of their forthcoming album of the same
name and it is a treat. Rattling garage-blues guitars and crashing drums make for
a frenetic energy and a real sense of urgency with an underbelly of paranoia.
However, some fiercely strong singing that pushes the vocal chords to their
limits smashes that paranoia with gritted teeth and a steely, unblinking stare.
Ace of Wands occupy the same kind of space as Anna Calvi, PJ Harvey and early
Florence + the Machine and on this evidence that new album is going to be essential
listening.
