SLUGGER – SINGLE REVIEW

Slugger – Sometimes Life Is Like The Second

Season of Friday Night Lights

Release Date: Out Now

Half the challenge of writing a music blog is trying to find things that sound good, engaging or just plain different to everything else you’ve received that day/week/month. This latest release from Brighton soloist Slugger certainly ticks those boxes and, while it might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it stops the world from spinning quite so rapidly for five and a half minutes. I have no idea what the title means but ‘Sometimes Life Is Like The Second Season of Friday Night Lights’ is unlikely to get confused with a Celine Dion power ballad so that’s something. Musically, there’s an introspection and frustration to this track that I find utterly transfixing and you’d find it huddled in the corner of the same day-time pub as Dorian Cox, Cassels and Slow Dive – none of them talking or making eye contact. The lo-fi guitar and splashes of percussion give this a raw vibe but each note is carefully and methodically placed for maximum so if you want to just stop for a bit and give your mind a chance to catch up with you then pop this on and have a good long stare out of a window. It’ll do you good.
