I’ve been enjoying watching Emma Blackery’s career unfold and her steady stream of excellent singles. New release ‘Icarus’, however, is a little disappointing compared to previous releases. Sure, the excellent observed lyrics are there and Blackery’s delivery is still great but all the way through this one I just couldn’t stop remembering how good Ellie Goulding used to be and how her new stuff leaves me cold. In the context of an album this track might well provide a pause for thought and a welcome change of energy but as a standalone track it doesn’t quite meet the mark of its predecessors. Then again, Blackery was soaring pretty high so maybe this is a necessary adjustment in altitude to ensure survival.
