NICK FABER – SINGLE REVIEW

Nick Faber – What Happened Yesterday
Nick Faber - What Happened Yesterday
(Fabyl)

Release Date: Out Now

I often rile against downloads for a variety of reasons but the main issue for me is the lack of time spend pouring over sleeve notes which made up a large proportion of my youth. It was this such activity which deeply embedded the name Nick Faber in my memory banks so when this single came around it triggered something. Thankfully, the press for this piece reminded me that Faber has been behind hits by the likes of Kylie, Sugababes and Badly Drawn Boy so the pedigree is strong and that sets up a certain level of pressure. No matter, this first solo release from Faber (on his own Fabyl label) goes by the name ‘What Happened Yesterday’ and it’s a huge, funky jam. Sweeping, Disney fantasy strings get things going before a funky, downtown Detroit jam kicks in which sounds like a mash up between Parov Stelar and Nile Rodgers. The keys and groove are pure Elevator Suite while the sole lyric, “Don’t remember how I got this way, don’t recall what happened yesterday”, is perfect for a summer’s afternoon set at Bestival. There are a couple of B-Side remixes plus ‘Unstoppable’ which has a Fatboy Slim meets Bentley Rhythm Ace vibe to it in amongst the horns and funked up beats. All in all, I am completely sold on this and can’t wait to blast this out at a summer parties. The only question is; what took you so long Nick Faber? Huh?
