ELLIE OCCLESTON - SINGLE REVIEW

Ellie Occleston – Splinters

Ellie Occleston - Splinters

Release Date: Out Now

“Today I lost my sanity”. That’s a pretty bold statement to kick off your debut single with but then you’ve got to be bold these days, right? That said, Liverpudlian singer-songwriter Ellie Occleston has something of the iron fist in the velvet glove about her judging from this first release. ‘Splinters’ is, on the face of it, a downbeat piano ballad with something of the Ben Fold’s Five about it (I’m hearing ‘Brick’ particularly) and Occleston’s voice is effortlessly rangy with soul and emotion behind every uttered word. The piano notes move from gentle to direct with consummate ease and the mood flows from Sinead O’Connor through to Kate Bush with flickers of Joanna Newsome and Laura Marling. This is undoubtedly beautiful music from a pure talent – it’s also the perfect soundtrack to a temporarily peaceful and snowy British winter.
