BEACH RIOT – SINGLE REVIEW

Beach Riot – Serial Scruff (Killing Moon
Beach Riot - Serial Scruff
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

LWM favourites Beach Riot are back with a new single and I’m slightly unnerved by the fact that it’s nearly 5 minutes long. You see, these guys trade in getting straight to the point with a punch and a kick for being so quick. Nevertheless, ‘Serial Scruff’ is still astounding stuff that builds from a lackadaisical riff in to a ball-busting, wrecking ball of a Nirvana meets Throwing Muses riff that exists in the dark parts of your brain – you just don’t know it yet. Rhythmically, this is the evolutionary result of the Presidents of the United States of America having a one-night stand with Metal Molly but stylistically we’re somewhere in the more sombre, serious area of grunge. When that chorus drops and spirals (not quite out of control) you can almost see the disaffected youth of the 90s circle pitting the shit out of this one in a sweaty dive bar somewhere. Then, when you think about it, the fucked-up nature of the world right now is screaming out for more music to get angry to and angry music you can dance to is something to be cherished these days.
