FOR ESME – SINGLE REVIEW

For Esme – Doubtmouth
For Esme - Doubtmouth

Release Date: Out Now

Right you let, sit up now and pay attention. We’re dealing with an important and excellent song here courtesy of Toronto’s Pyschology graduate For Esme and her new single ‘Doubtmouth’. In a world that is finally starting to switch on to the importance of womankind, this single is one of a movement of songs that finally get to say what they’ve been wanting to say for years but never felt empowered to do so. ‘Doubtmouth’ opens with the kind of synth bass throb you’d expect at the start of an Airwolf reboot before the relieved and confident vocals pour out; “Well I almost choked on all the doubt, as the words were trying to leave my mouth”. The persistent beat and synths are up close and personal like someone talking to you without breaking eye contact as they move gradually closer to you. There are moments when the passion spills over in to riot girl shouts but that just adds to the honest energy of this track. “Too bright a light to be dimming myself down for you, too bright a bitch to be dumbing myself down for you” – if you have a daughter who needs to know she has a place in the world, a voice to be heard and a mind to be respected then write this lyric large on her bedroom wall and watch the shackles fall off. OK, she’ll think you’ve lost the plot but if you put this on as the soundtrack then at least you can have a good dance about it. Contender for single of the year and it’s only February.
