Back in 2015 the world was a
simpler place and in my end of year awards, I singled out ‘Lagos’ by Azu Yeche
as the single of the year. Now, three years later, Yeche is back with ‘Farmhouse’
and I’m pleased to say that initial hunch has paid off many times over. This
new single opens with a hopeful and uplifting melody picked out on a piano
before handclaps get things moving with a soulful gospel vibe. Yeche’s voice is
sweet, rich and warm as he weaves together the rhythm and swelling melody with
lyrics about a simple yet richly fulfilling upbringing. This is one of those
songs that is just imbued with joy and life which can only infect you like an inoculation
against the general grimness and bleakness of life in 2018. Like I said, 2015 was
a simpler place but right now is all the better for Azu Yeche.
