THE LEVELLERS – SINGLE REVIEW

The Levellers – Drug Bust McGee (On the Fiddle Recordings)
The Levellers - Drug Bust McGee

Release Date: Out Now

I was kinda waiting for the Levellers to resurface what with all the upheaval in the world and social injustices rattling around at the moment. As reliably obtuse as ever the Levellers’ new single ‘Drug Bust McGee’ is a latter day Pogues-esque shuffle hanging off a warm piano riff and dripping in lush strings with that unmistakable Mark Chadwick vocal cutting through like a rusty knife through butter. There’s storytelling and world weariness in there that Elbow would kill for but also a sweetness and genuine affection for the subject and the song craft that is massively endearing. I hope that when their time comes, this is one of the songs that the Levellers are remembered for and not just because of the Abbey Road recording and John Leckie production.
