Now, my momma always told me not
to cross a New York girl but after hearing this single from Staten Island’s Raina
Bee & The Hive I’m not event tempted to test the theory. ‘Queen of the South’
is a snarling, snakeskin boot wearing, gun toting tune with Kill Bill levels of
revenge as the lyrical theme and a sense of dirty deep south rock’n’roll when
it comes to the music. Raina Bee has a treacle sweet voice that might draw you
in but don’t turn your back on the way out as she channels the likes of Ani Di
Franco, Fiona Apple, Regina Spektor and the Indigo Girls having a sleepover to
watch early Tarantino films and listen to Ennio Morriconi whilst make margaritas
and telling stories of loser exes.
