PHILIP WHITEHEAD – SINGLE REVIEW

Philip Whitehead – Winter
Philip Whitehead - Winter

Release Date: 26th January 2018

It’s January. It’s grey and damp. I haven’t seen sun for about 3 weeks. So, forgive me if a song with the blunt-as-a-spoon title of ‘Winter’ doesn’t make my heart jump for joy. Then again, this isn’t a jump for joy kind of song so I don’t want to give you the wrong impression. London lad Philip Whitehead has been a favourite of this blog for a while with his blues-folk stylings but this tune takes his talents to another level. The vocal arrangements and sparse instrumentation build a fine meshed background for Whitehead’s soulful vocal to give Rag’n’Bone Man a run for his money. When the drums kick in and the organ starts to luxuriate over the beat you get a really chilled Zero 7 vibe and that vocal just gets increasingly warming and inviting. “I’m so tired” Whitehead repeats and you just want to curl up with him under a velvet blanket with candles all around and a big ol’ glass of wine. Beautiful.
