JOHANNA GLAZA – SINGLE REVIEW

Johanna Glaza – Space Mermaid
Johanna Glaza - Space Mermaid

Release Date: Out Now

What do we have here then? We’ll Johanna Glaza is an artist from Lithuania and her new single, ‘Space Mermaid’, is not quite as Europop as you might think from the title. In fact, it’s not Europop at all, no this is something quite different. The delicate and angular piano notes are stitched together by Glaza’s vocal which, and I use this reference lightly, is definitely in the same vein as Kate Bush. There are elements of Anna Calvi, Regina Spektor and Tori Amos in the music and melodies as well but what Glaza has in spades is a unique approach to constructing sparse and spacious music that is at one moment bleak and then instantly triumphant. The use of the piano to be both snowy and warm depending on the chosen notes and rhythm is a rare talent but work that in to one song that stops the clocks and stills the wind is hugely impressive.
