Despite a particularly dubious taste
in shirts and the fact that these lads seemingly live in a basement, this is an
absolutely banging indie-dance track. Brighton combo Sweetmates, armed with new
single ‘Tapes’, are ready to take the University indie-disco scene by storm and
if you’ve got any sense you will get yourself front row tickets. Take a loose,
Kasabian meets Stone Roses bass and guitar combo, mix in some poppy drums and
then a few dance beats along with well-placed synth notes to get yourself a guaranteed
dance floor filler. This is primal and exciting but also incredibly well
polished and slick. Ying and Yang in one song, it almost makes me forgive the
shirts…..almost.
