You know those moments when you
take a bite of something or a sip and the flavour makes you go ‘wow’ because of
the overwhelming freshness and surprise compared to your preconceptions? Well,
Vancouver trio Said The Whale have given my ears that response which is no
unwelcome sensation. New single ‘Step Into The Darkness’ is an utterly sumptuous
slice of lo-fi electro pop that is all about opening the curtains on a sunny
Saturday morning to let the world in but with a lyrical soul that has been
touched by a greater darkness. The soaring, uplifting melodies and gang vocals
feel so right and are tailor made for the montage seen of a coming of age movie
where the awkward, gangly kid realises that being himself is OK even if that
means being awkward, gangly and slightly at odds with the rest of society. A little
positivity and hope, then, just when the world needs it most.
