It takes a brave man (or woman)
to tackle the classics and there are two approaches – a straight up cover in
the style of the original or a complete reworking with very little attention
paid to the original. Geordie boy RJ Thompson (I’m going to guess at Rupert
Julian) has taken on the Dylan protest classic ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’’
and opted for the first option of a fairly respectful cover. Sure, Thompson’s
voice is smooth and accomplished so lacks some of Bobby’s crackle and edge but
this never quite falls in to the X-Factor realm of not really feeling the
lyrics. The use of piano instead of guitar works well and you could imagine an
arrangement like this being used as some sort of Live Aid style protest charity
single to raise enough money to build a wall around Trump, May and their
right-wing capitalist cronies….and put a lid on. Still, there’s never been a
greater need to sing protest songs and if RJ Thompson can bring this one to the
attention of a new audience then that’s alright by me.
