Carnivals – City of Skulls
Carnivals - City of Skulls |
Release Date: Out Now
The chiming guitar at the
beginning of this single from Londoners Carnivals literally made me do a
cartoony head shake of surprise which would have been funny if I hadn’t been
sitting in a room on my own in lounge pants. New single ‘City of Skulls’ rings
out like a distress call from a musical ship lost in the late 80s with the
aforementioned guitars and smooth synths all hassled along but Keith Moon-esque
drumming that just won’t quit. We’re talking Tame Impala but with more English
aloofness or The Killers but less concern for their mass appeal or hair
products. And then, at just under the three-minute mark, Carnivals go and drop
it down in to a Kula Shaker meets the Doors Jazz break that has no place in a
single. Or does it? It does, of course it does. It’s a brave slice of music
that explores more ideas than most get through in an album.
