The frankly superb Brooklyn Doran
is back with another single ahead of a new album due out this month and it is
yet more evidence that Canada is still holding its head high as a forger of new
musical boundaries and a melting pot of talent. ‘The Villain’, the
aforementioned new single, a soft and unassuming piece of music featuring
undulating guitar notes and soft piano notes but Doran’s powerful vocals and
some pounding drums make this song so much more than the sum of its parts. Elements
of Florence + The Machine and latter day Alanis are there but with a more
soulful sound and a more ethereal quality that draws you, the listener, in
until the mists of Doran’s spell surround you completely.
