The talented Gavin Ellis (aka
Memory Maze) is back with a frantic and frenetic new single that simultaneously
exists in a downtempo space. 'The Closest Thing To Heaven' has an agitated,
twitchy beat that may just have consumed a little too much Red Bull (other
horrible drinks are available) but Ellis's smooth vocals and a rolling,
undulating bass line keep things from getting irritating. Then the chorus drops
and something Arcade Fire meets the Flaming Lips occurs as the keys swathe and
some choppy, 80s guitars add a little punctuation. This is classy, soaring and
emotive music which, let's face it, is more than you deserve on a Monday. I do
spoil you...
