ELLIE MAKES MUSIC - SINGLE REVIEW

Ellie Makes Music - Mountains
Ellie Makes Music - Mountains

Release Date: 27th July 2015

Cardiff based artist Ellie James who goes by the stage name Ellie Makes Music which is essentially taking the Ronseal approach to artist naming activities and who are we to argue? This new single from the one woman singing machine, 'Mountains', is anything but obvious though. The off-kilter clickety-clack rhythms and stabbed organs are held together by James' furious acoustic guitar playing and pure vocal. There are elements of Flight Of The Conchords about the arrangements and more than a smidge of Jake Morley to the songwriting which are both very good things but previous reviewers have likened Ellie Makes Music to Taylor Swift (no, just no) and Laura Marling (maybe) and I think that's just lazy journalism. What this artist has in abundance is a confidence to try new things, push on unopened doors and, as borne out by the lyrics, to stand up for her own individuality regardless of what the sheep think. Sublime and refreshing stuff.
