THE BLACK FIELDS - SINGLE REVIEW

The Black Fields - Monster
The Black Fields - Monster

Release Date: Out Now

Now then, I've posted a few reviews of cover versions recently so I want to assure you that the new single from Brighton bunch The Black Fields is not a cover the one hit wonder of the same name by the Automatic. No, this 'Monster' is a swaggering, macarbre tune with a penchant for the theatrical. Elements of the Doors shine through in the arrangements and the performance of frontman Ross Scarfield. Then again, the music has a more modern feel and influences as wide as Space, Nick Cave and the Cooper Temple Clause can all be heard creeping out of the shadows of this tune. Some pleasing changes of tempo and a song that feels as though it has been thought about are both pleasing but the use of a Theramin always puts the cherry on my musical cake. Tasty indeed.
