The Christmas songs are coming
thick and fast now and this one is a particularly sombre affair but there's a
certain forlorn beauty to it that's hard to ignore. 'Another Messy Christmas' opens with a lonely piano melody
preparing a bed for Michaelson's croaky, hungover vocal that puts Nick Cave to
shame in the grumpy singer stakes. Lyrically, the song takes a look at
Christmas from Santa's wife's perspective which, let's face it, is a pretty
crappy place to be at Christmas. Beautiful, brief, amusing and with just enough
sprinkle of Christmas magic to make it festive. When he sings "I know
you're Father Christmas but there's one house that you missed" I don't
care who you are, it kinda tugs at the heart strings. So, when you're opening
your stockings this year, spare a thought for poor old Mrs Santa.
