MEGHAN TRAINOR - SINGLE REVIEW

Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass (Epic Records)
Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass

Release Date: 5th October 2014

I've been circling this one for a while, like a suspicious vulture waiting to see if the lion is really dead before swooping in to pick over the meat on the bones. The reason for this caution? Well, Meghan Trainor has scored a number one in the US with this pop number about having a positive body image (not fishing, oddly) and this had me worried that this would be a saccharine sweet number dripping in over sincerity. Nevertheless, I'm always prepared to try new things out and I was pleasantly surprised - like when you think you've spent all your money the night before and then find ten pounds in your jeans. 'All About That Bass' is, musically speaking, firmly entrenched in the Motown era and 50s rock'n'roll but in terms of vocal performance this is somewhere between Amy Winehouse, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Cee-Lo Green. So it's a positive message for girls (ish, there is still way too much emphasis on what boys want to see in a girl) and a tune with roots in the classic era of pop song writing. Not bad, America, not bad at all.
