ROSELLAS - EP REVIEW

Rosellas - Shadow Dancing EP (First Run
Records)

Release Date: Out Now

I'm not sure what, if anything, I expected from this EP but before I knew it I had listened to the whole EP and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Rosellas are a Mancunian quartet who are ploughing their own furrow as exemplified by their new EP, 'Shadow Dancing'. We get going with 'Who Do You Shine For?' which is an expansive indie track more in the vein of Shed Seven or Embrace than Oasis or the Happy Mondays. 'Beautiful Lonely' follows this vibe with an energetic acoustic strum at the heart of a driving track that's perfect for road tripping.

There's a slow dance vibe to 'Before I Forget You' that speaks of heartbreak, endings and a sense of an era coming to a close as the guitars sway and the drums shuffle through the cries of last orders at the bar. Title track 'Shadow Dancing' bounces along with an early Stereophonics energy with jangling guitars and vocals that put an arm round your shoulder and buy you a pint to ease the pain. Final track 'Better Love' continues the theme of turning your back on the past and heading for the future with both hope and pain in your heart but the horizon firmly in focus. This is a special collection of songs that remind you there are still bands out there, crafting songs, and delivering them with the kind of musical ability that some are seeking to replace with AI. Hang in there boys, you're fighting the good fight.
