Coming out of Alberta with thunder in her belly is singer-songwriter Mercedes Brown and her gutsy new single 'Playing With Fire'. A chugging guitar riff and Brown's gritted teeth vocal gives this a grunge vibe but the vocal harmonies and uplifting chorus steer us more towards Sheryl Crow or Nelly Furtado in terms of cross-over appeal. The middle eight breakdown has a folky, rootsy vibe with the low strung acoustic chug give a sense of brooding anger that is in danger of spilling over at any moment.
