BEA ELMY MARTIN - EP REVIEW

Bea Elmy Martin - Under The Yew (Vol. 2)

Release Date: Out Now

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Well, in this case, I shall. You see, on her new EP Bea Elmy Martin has captured the essence of summer in six songs so the comparison is entirely justified. Opening track 'High' is the musical equivalent of watching the sun rise over the mountainous horizon, the beat dropping just as the first morning light hits your face with warmth and hope. The breathy vocals of 'Born To Fly' are the epitome of a peacefulness that can only be found in a morning without plans and the rippling piano notes combined with shuffling beats could see this one sit comfortably on an Ibiza Chillout compilation.

There's more of a driving, folky sound to 'Lost' which emerges into a soulful lilt while 'Unscarred' sways with the gentle energy of a hammock as you rest, recharge, and rebuild. 'Written On Me' has a real sundowner vibe with jazzy undertones and Martin's voice doing that delicate and fragile but still oh-so-strong thing that is always a winner in my book. The final track on this collection is 'Anouk', an intimate fireside song played out on acoustic guitar and fluttering strings that swell to create a Zero 7-esque tune that will soothe even the most troubled souls. This is an utterly beautiful collection of songs and we all need a little more beauty in our lives, don't we?
