Lola Bates - Girl's Girl

I'm not sure that I had any strong expectations of this new single from Laurel Canyon's Lola Bates but 'Girl's Girl' certainly took me by surprise. Hanging loosely from the louche bassline Bates plucks out, this song is made of breaths, whispers and the finest gauze but as you get closer you'll see that the gauze is spun from razor sharp wires that could slice you in half. Think Kate Bush, think Tori Amos, think Ani DiFranco but with the sharpness and power of Smashing Pumpkins. A beautifully delicate song but delicate in the way a landmine is delicate.
