Sometimes, just sometimes, an old soul is born into a young body and I have a sneaking suspicion that's what happened to Bennie Hayfield so we must protect him at all costs. Hayfield's debut solo single (see also his work with the outstanding Saiphon), 'A Dozen Empty Graves', is an acoustic guitar and vocal arrangement but the string work (both strumming and picking) is effortlessly brilliant and the lyrics are akin to the storytelling brilliance of rock and prog Gods of days gone by. Think Genesis, Led Zep or Sabbath but stripped back without ever losing the potential to turn the amps to eleven and introduce a full band from behind enormous velvet curtains. A rock God in the making, take heed.
