Reef - Naked (2025) (Raging Sea Records)
Release Date: Out Now
This feels weird. It's like I've ended up on a blind date with the daughter of my first true love and I'm spending the whole meal checking for similarities and differences. You see, it's 30 years since Reef released their debut album, 'Replenish', and this was a formative album for me so I absolutely devoured every track with relish. Now, with an updated rhythm section and a celebration tour on the horizon, the band have re-recorded the track that first brough them to attention of the rock world. The riff is still hugely recognisable and infectiously hooky, the bass still pummels you in the ribs and the drums are both tight and loose in equal measure. Sure, the youthful exuberance of the original is dialled down a little but the power is is still there and the gravelly vocals of Gary Stringer have more pathos and wisdom somehow. My tickets are booked for the Bristol show and I can't wait to hear this among all the other tracks from an album that changed my life in the best way possible.
