The Viewers - If Not Now, When?
Release Date: Out Now
Cornish mods the Viewers have had a hard time of it over the last few years with both death and cancer besetting the band, so you can understand the thought process behind their new album title, 'If Not Now, When?'. The album starts with 'Around and Around', a rousing, Who-esque stomp that immediately gets your attention and makes you want to rush out to your Vespa with a piece of toast hanging from your mouth and adventure in your heart. 'I Said Too Much' maintains the energy but adds in some organ blasts for a little extra soul before 'So Much More' cranks up the jangle on the guitars to create a Monkees sound that plugs straight into your nostalgia vein.
The frantically tinkled ivories of 'Good Times' gives you a tingle down the spine and then the road tripping vibes come flooding out so turn up the volume and wind down your windows. The energy levels drop for the acoustic'n'organ groove of 'Can You See Me?' as we're allowed in to the more vulnerable side of the band but it's 'Turning Over Stones' that is my favourite track on the album with the smoky chug, refined guitar licks and gravelly vocals giving this a Joe Cocker meets Ocean Colour Scene sound.
There's a misty sunrise in Kernowfornia vibe to 'Lemon Drops' but one that's drenched in sadness before 'Blowinghouse Hill' gets us back to the Manfred Mann stomp that will have you dancing before you know it. Similarly, the hip-shaking sway of 'The Tale Of Tiger Lily' deserves to soundtrack a montage scene in a film where somebody romps around Brighton beach or Carnaby Street on a colourful day out. Penultimate track 'Cloud9' has a dreamy quality to it as the wash of keys makes for a lush sound before the album closes out on 'Too Much Music (Not Enough Soul)', a comment on the state of the mainstream music world in 2025 but also a great, organ swathed rock'n'roll groove that is part ZZ Top and part Blues Brothers. 'If Not Now, When?' is the sound of a band having fun while they get their message out there because, after all, what more do you need if you've got three chords and the truth?
