Tankus @ Carnglaze Caverns, Cornwall
Show Date: 5th September 2025
Criminal. That's the word that sprang to mind as I left this gig in a hidden corner of Cornwall with the sounds of Tankus still ringing in my ears. Firstly, it is criminal that the Carnglaze Caverns venue isn't a more popular fixture on the UK gig circuit because not only is it a singularly unique space for live music (where else can you watch a band in a space that used to house the Navy's rum supply?) but is also an excellent venue that is laid out perfectly for music.
The second act of criminality is that there weren't more people in attendance to enjoy one of the most talented and hard working/gigging bands the UK has to offer right now - on a Friday night the venue and band deserved more dancing folks in the audience.
Which brings me on to the third and final criminal conundrum - how the hell are Tankus not bestriding this planet playing to to packed out stadia and regularly chumming up with Jools Holland on New Years Eve? The six musicians are expertly captained through the choppy waters of their set by their ever charismatic leader Jaz Delorean and we are all along for the ride. Songs like 'God, Oil, Money' and 'You Can Do Anything' are firm fan favourites for a good spirited sing along but other moments descend to Jazz inspired, New Orleans flavoured chaos.
The skill of the band to switch from Chas'n'Dave inspired pub-piano sing-alongs to full prog-jazz wig-outs is something truly marvellous to behold but this is not a spectator sport so once you have admired the beauty from afar, you really have to dive in and let it overwhelm your senses. It's a lot like making love to a beautiful woman...
