thanks mom - Wake Me! EP
Release Date: 9th July 2025
I often think about having a map of the world somewhere in my house where I could put pins in to see the origins of all the music I get sent to review. If I did that, I'm pretty sure this would be the first pin I'd be putting in County Kildare, the home indie quartet thanks mom. 'Wake Me!' is the new EP from the four-piece and we get going with the title track, an energetic indie-pop blast with fuzzy guitars, hectic drums and the kind of vibe that screams 'garage band of mates with nothing better to do'. 'If You Want Me' is up next is more intense initially before pausing and settling into a calmer, more sedate(d) mode that erupts for the chorus.
On 'November', thanks mom give strong brooding indie vibes while 'Miss Me, Please' takes a more fuzz-pop route with hints of Sleigh Bells meets Beach House. 'Why Don't U Like Me Anymore?' picks up the pace with a pop-punk feel that has a Waitresses sound in the verse but goes full-on Hole meets Veruca Salt in the chorus. Penultimate track and latest single 'Grace's Passport' is the kind of song that you know goes down well with a chaotic and frenetic energy that starts at 100mph and doesn't let up. The EP closes out on 'Teenage Sacrifice' and the band let all their frustrations, anger and heartache come pouring out via distorted amps. This is the kind of band that you could fall in love with at a non-descript gig on a Wednesday in Camden town but who could also find themselves with an army of fans, dedicated to their music.
