I'll admit to having some reservations to reviewing this latest release from Van Morrison but I'm quite interested in trying to separate the art from the artist at the moment so wanted to give the song a change. Folks, I can say I am 100% vindicated in this decision as 'Cutting Corners' is just a farm raised, corn fed, free range beauty of a song. Morrison's voice is, of course, recognisably gorgeous and the cracks of age just make it found finer than a well aged bourbon. The mix of soul, blues and folk makes for a sumptuous gumbo but it is the sense of reflection and sepia toned memories that makes this the kind of song you want to curl up with under a blanket. Oh, and that organ sound? Lush.
