TWAT UNION - EP REVIEW

Twat Union - Don't Look It In The Eye (Alcopop! Records)

Release Date: Out Now

Six women, five tracks and a whole lot of noise coming your way courtesy of London collective Twat Union and their debut EP, 'Don't Look It In The Eye'. If you've yet to experience the self-confessed feral feminist theatre punks, this is as good a place to start as any so pull on your fishnets, don't hold back with the mascara and let's get involved. The EP opens with 'Little Pink Drill' and some gorgeous a cappella singing but down lean in too close because this one explodes into a country tinged garage-punk anthem. Recent single 'Singer Of The Band' still hits the dryly-funny bone square on while taking down the rampant misogyny in the music industry that, for some reason, just will not die.

On 'Red Flag', the band's slinky, indie-pop comes to the fore with a dark but delicious guitar riff matched by rumbling drums before 'Danger Boob' comes romping in like the Red Bull fuelled daughters of Shampoo ready to smash up the soft play and confuse the hell out of the mums and dads in attendance. The EP finishes with 'UTI', a song which starts with the line "I've had sex now I'm on antibiotics" - the most authentic song about free love there ever was. The only warning I would give you about Twat Union is that you shouldn't confuse them for a novelty band because these are proper songs, brilliantly delivered with lyrics that will keep you entertained, inspired and informed throughout. Brilliant stuff all round.
