Thwack! - Buried But Blooming EP
Release Date: Out Now
'Buried But Blooming' is the debut EP from orchestral London punks 'Thwack!' and it is six tracks of adventure that you need to jump into feet first to get the full experience. The EP opens with 'The Rockstop Overture', a cello rich melody joined by the kind of spoken word you'd expect from a modern reworking of a Dickens tome. On 'Suckerpunch', the band embrace their gypsy-folk sides with the kind of song that would have the Child Catcher from Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang getting pumped before a day full of locking up minors. I'm not sure what 'Blu Ray (Still Thorned)' means but the theatrical delivery is on a par with anything Arcade Fire have ever produced and that is certainly meant as a compliment.
The second half of the EP starts with 'Three Angels' which reminds me of the excellent music once made by the B of the Bang but based around the Christmas Carol as reimagined by the Pogues. 'Margret Thatcher Blood Snatcher' might be my favourite song title of 2025 so far and the imagery of the late Iron Lady stalking the woods at night set to festival-ready arrangements that will have them jigging and reeling in the mosh pit. We finish up with 'Dissolver of Sugar' and a wonderful gumbo of instrumentation, influences and genres that cements by conviction that these will be undoubtedly spellbinding when seen live. A bold, original and thoroughly intoxicating debut and there is almost certainly more to come.
