Dinosaur Pile-Up - 'Bout To Lose It (Mascot Records)
Release Date: Out Now
OK, there's one song here but there's way more going on than one song so I'm splitting this in to two reviews.
First, up let's talk about the music. ''Bout To Lose It' is the first new material from Dinosaur Pile-Up in six years and it is a beautiful release of pent-up frustration like a tiger being released from a cage after years captivity. The opening riff is all gritted teeth and unblinking eyes, the stabbing beat is taking no prisoners and the first vocal is literally a scream of release before "I guess I'm back on the edge maybe I never left". The trio filmed the video in what looks like a mock-up of the red room from Twin Peaks and it is fitting for a band that have been lost and in a confusing place but are seemingly finding their way back with power, melodies and hooks - it is the Dinosaur Pile-Up way.
Now, the back story to this song is as Lazarus-like as they come with guitarist and singer Matt Bigland having a serious and terrifying health battle over the last few years. During this time was hospitalised on multiple occasions, the band lost their label and possibly their sense of purpose all in front of the backdrop of a pandemic and global crises. Lesser bands would have thrown in the towel and, understandably, walked away but not Dinosaur Pile-Up. Oh no. These guys are cut from something different and if ever a band deserved an up-tick in fortunes then it's these guys. Enjoy the music, sure, but recognise what it has taken to make it.
