BETTER JOY - EP REVIEW

better joy - Heading Into Blue EP

Release Date: Out Now

‘Heading Into Blue’ is the debut EP from Mancunian indie-wonderkid Better Joy and it is a shot in the arm for a blogger who is realising some of his favourite and formative albums are about to turn 30. We get underway with ‘Couldn’t Run Forever’ which positively skips and bounces with an impatient indie energy power the drums and a bass line that I just want to plug into my veins – the perfect song to get us up and, ironically, running. ‘Waiting On Time’ is as perkily alt-poppy as every despite its themes of frustration and enforced patience while ‘What A Day’ slithers and slides up and down the fret board under vocals that Chrissie Hynde and Alison Moyet would be proud of.

Former single ‘Quiet Thing’ has a brilliant rawness to the production that makes it sound honest and almost intimate but as the prominence of the bass and guitars grows in the mix you feel the confidence of the song start to emerge from the shadows. The Joy Division inspired sound of ‘Carnival’ mixes with some more Millenial pop sensibilities to sweeten the pill before final track, ‘Can I Land The Plane?’ leaves us on a woozy, Twin Peaks inspired note that is both uncertain and comforting in a weird way. Better Joy has the energy, ideas and melodies to make a real go of things so it’s up to us to make sure she’s supported, elevated and not swallowed up by a merciless music industry. You in?
