We Three Kings - By Royal Appointment
Release Date: Out Now
Manchester duo We Three Kings come at you hard and fast, like the first cigarette of the day, so I've enjoyed the shot in the arms of their singles but how will their music fare in an album format? 'By Royal Appointment' is the pair's latest long-player and it opens up with 'Blackout', a tune that comes in with blistering guitars, powerhouse drums and a siren wailing to warn you of what's coming. 'Do It' is a little more garage-punky in its energy but the speed and intensity is there with breathless vocals that are part the Yo-Yos and part Sex Pistols. The opening trio is completed with 'The Edge Of Death' which reminds of Moriaty as the two-piece thunder through the riffs and beats with unnerving energy.
The energy continues on 'Gold Digger' with gritted teeth vocals, tight riffs and slabs of drums before 'Give It To Me, GO!' goes racing around the streets of Manchester at night in hot pursuit of good times. The guitars on 'Sold My Soul To The Devil' have an 80s rock vibe to them and but the drums and vocals are more tense and Monster Truck-esque while 'Buried Alive' is somewhere between Arctic Monkeys at their heaviest and Billy Idol at his most swaggering and lip-curling. 'The Criminal' finds us back in the car racing through boxes and down side streets as the guitars sear with razor sharpness but 'Get Back' is a song designed to make mosh pits explode in all directions.
Penultimate track 'Walk' is my favourite track on the album with its swaggering energy and throat bursting vocals that just make you want to go and find the nearest sweaty bar where the music is loud and ceilings are low. The album finishes off with 'Demons', a real rock'n'roll flourish which, performed live, is surely the kind of track that will leave the guitars feeding back and the drums kicked over. We Three Kings are a force of nature, a force to be reckoned with but a force for good - ultimately. Rock'n'roll good, that is.
