GURRIERS - ALBUM REVIEW

Gurriers - Come And See (No Filter)

Release Date: Out Now

It seems most debut albums are 'highly anticipated' these days but, in the case of Irish outfit Gurriers, the anticipation is justifiably sky high. 'Come And See' is as impressive a debut as you're ever likely to hear so buckle up and get ready to fall in love with some new music. 'Nausea' gets us underway with a frantic, frenetic and frustrated slice of industrial indie punk that bounces around the room, screaming in the faces of strangers. 'Des Golbin' might sound like a taxi driver from a Terry Pratchet novel but, sonically speaking, this is a swaggering, bold and intense track that blends the worlds of IDLES and Franz Ferdinand with a drop of Kasabian to make one almighty sound.

On 'Dipping Out' the quintet bring a rattling, bristling guitar sound to the table paired with a driving beat and vocals spat out with political venom and a strong sense of social injustice. The sinister pinging of the guitars on 'Prayers' harks back to the Sisters of Mercy via Fontaines D.C. while 'Close Call' rattles along at 100mph with a grinding, stretched out guitar sound which is genuinely unsettling whilst also acting as a siren song. Similarly, the drumming on 'No More Photos' is borderline unhinged - like a mix of Animal and John Bonham - but we are given a respite of sorts on 'Interlude' with an echo of orchestral strings arriving just in time to soothe any frayed nerves.

Recent single 'Top of the Bill' is still swaggeringly beautiful, like starting into the deep blue eyes of the local badboy and falling hard, but 'Sign Of The Times' is more direct, bludgeoning you with a blunt bass and drum combination. Penultimate track 'Approachable' has a more American feel to the guitars but, once again, the pace and urgency reminds you that Gurriers have points to make, points to prove and no time to waste in getting there. The album finishes up with the title track, 'Come And See', which easily the most expansive and ambitious moment with soaring buzzsaw guitars and the illusion of time as the band create a soundscape as desolate as it is beautiful. Urgent, vital and brilliant in the truest sense of each of those words and, as such, one for your Christmas list.
