GIRL_IRL - EP REVIEW

girl_irl - (re)introduction EP (DMY Recordings)

Release Date: Out Now

So this is officially advertised as an EP but at 13 tracks long I think it fits firmly into the album category. Then again, '(re)introduction' is only just over half an hour long so it's positively punky in length. Whatever we're calling it, the collection starts with 'bullseye', a song that skits and glitches into existence with unsettled energy before 'contort' continues the vibe with a warehouse party vibe mixed with semi-bored, dead-eyed vocals from girl_irl. The pace drops slightly on 'lag' but the electro rhythms keep coming as with the intense 'anthem' and the pulsating 'buzz' featuring Crosstalk on guest duties.

The idea of labelling this with a format is actually a bit of a misnomer, this whole thing is just an extended mood with the likes of 'complex' and 'spalding' just adding to the computer game soundtrack sound of the whole piece. On 'siren' is the sound of Mean Girls as reimagined by Tim Burton and the Aphex Twin while 'lock' is nightmarishly playful and 'match' slithers and clatters like robotic insects invading your dreams.

The hectic pace of 'sting' takes rap to an almost unfathomable new level before 'float' initially provides some respite from the relentless pace but then spreads out into the darkness with mechanical spider legs. Closing track 'sinclair' pulls all the mechanical, electrical, digital and dark ideas together into one final assault on the senses. This is the kind of music that leaves you feeling attacked but if you stand up to the assault then the music will respect you and you will be better for it.
