RUBBERBAND GIRL - ALBUM REVIEW

Rubberband Girl - Profiterole Vision

Release Date: Out Now

First things first, I love the title 'Profiterole Vision' for this album but please don't let it fool you into thinking this is a frivolous treat full of air. You see, second things second, Rubberband Girl is the kind of song-writing entity that pumps out instantly likeable and hooky melodies like they're blowing bubbles into a warm summer's breeze. Take opening track 'South Suburban Weekend', for example, with a rhythm that is part jazz and part train tracks, whisking you away to new spaces, new faces and new places for adventure and inspiration. Recent single 'Star In A Reasonably Priced Car' follows next with a country inspired melody and delicately tickled banjo blending to make a truly uplifting track to raise your spirits.

On 'Nothing But A Smile' we get a pop-perfect vocal performance from Caitlyn Scarlett on a song that is radio friendly disco but also contains the line "When you're wasted, you'll look up to the greatest and say "I could do that on a rainy night in Stokey" - a sentiment possibly lost on non-British audiences. The simple melody of 'Supercynical' has a Billy Joel meets Scissor Sister vibe to it while 'Weeds' is more delicate and folk inspired with rippling guitar strings leading to a stomping pop chorus performed with consummate confidence.

The sultry sway of 'In Hell' is reminiscent of Amy Winehouse, musically speaking, but the vocals belong firmly to Rubberband Girl and this is just another example of how versatile the songwriting and performance abilities are. On a grey day in late September, the sentiment of 'Summer Forever' seems a little lost on me but the vibe is sunny, the beat makes you sway and the playful vocal melody is delivered with soulful bliss that just about makes me drift away. Similarly, the chilled-out vibe of 'Sunday Morning Stuff' takes you to a dreamier and less urgent place before 'London Rain' dampens those spirits with a Duffy-esque vibe and a gorgeous guitar sound the drifts in from the corner of your memories.

The album finishes up on 'All We Have Is' with 60s Latin inspired guitars and another chance to luxuriate in those rich, warm vocal tones. 'Profiterole Vision' is an absolute delight of an album full of melodies, hooks, interesting lyrics and radio friendly production so the only thing missing is, well, you. Come get involved.
