Stepping out from behind the writing pad and backing vocal microphone for the likes of Rudimental, Little Simz and Miss Banks was a brave move but Caitlyn Scarlett, she at the front of Rubberband Girl, made such a move. And, based on her previous single and this one, this was the right move because 'Nothing But A Smile' is a gorgeous little track. Soulful but edgy vocals with more than a hint of Winehouse in the verses switch to disco pop in the chorus, channeling Sophie Ellis-Bexter at her flamboyant best. Melodically, this could easily be a Jamiroquai cut with sweeping strings, funky guitars and a beat that begs you to hit the dance floor. All in all, a gorgeous song.
