The Cheap Thrills - Mind Metro EP
Release Date: 21st February 2024
What's that you say? A quartet from Liverpool who know their way around a guitar and have a knack for melodies? OK, I'm in. The Cheap Thrills (who did you think I was talking about) are unveiling their new EP, 'Mind Metro', and it is something a little bit special. Driving guitars and determined vocals get things going on opening track 'Reborn' which explodes into an indie disco anthem by the time we reach the chorus. 'Escape' settles the pace down a little with a Zutons-esque kitchen sink ballad set to strummed acoustic chords and melodies that build slowly to a soaring climax.
On 'Last Orders', the band channel their inner Reverend & the Makers with the kind of song that will make grown men cry tears of joy mixed in with tears of regret but that's OK because tears all look the same so nobody will notice. The EP closes out with the laconic strum of 'Calypso Blue' which sounds like the kind of cocktail that will change the colour of your pee but is actually the kind of song that will have you day dreaming of days gone by and loves lost. The Cheap Thrills are that rare thing in 2024, a band that concentrates on writing great songs and lets the rest take care of itself. Nice work.
