My Life Story - Loving You Is Killing Me (Exilophone Records)
Release Date: Out Now
A comeback is always a risky thing to do when you've ridden high and then retreated from public view but there have been some excellent returns to form recently so I have high hopes for this return from 90s dandies My Life Story (aka Jake Shillingford and chums). 'Love You In Killing Me' is the first MLS release in five years and opens with recent single 'Running Out Of Heartbeats' which swaggers and thrusts in all the right places with Britpop cool and a sense of pop edge that is impossible to resist. 'I'm A God' keeps the energy high but with a more sweeping and electro-pop sound that hints at ABC or Human League but with a lighter, more modern touch.
On 'Numb Numb Numb' we return to a pleasing guitar chug full of pent up energy and expectation before the wonderfully titled 'Tits and Attitude' puts on a pair of dark glasses and parks itself at the end of the bar waiting for a good time to walk all the while channeling the charm of Neil Hannon. 'Bubblewrap' has a Long Blondes feel to it's muted cool and lo-fi production but 'Naked' is a more direct rock'n'roll romp with Kaiser Chiefs energy and the temptation to do the splits in the air at the end of each bar.
The second amazing title on the album, 'B-Side Girl', is as pure as an indie love song gets with dreamy vocals and a big drum sound that hits you right in the feels. With 'Identity Crisis' Shillingford gets back to careering through the streets on a Saturday night in search of mischief before 'The Urban Mountaineer' swoons in to play full of charm and panache. The album closes out on 'Wasted', a cinematic electro scene closer that draws you in only to blow you away with that classic MLS grandiosity. This is a brilliantly enjoyable album full of twists, turns and tunes which is a joy for all of us to behold.
