AKICITA - EP REVIEW

Akicita - Future In Disguise EP (Nala's World)

Release Date: Out Now

When you get called all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to support Leona Lewis on an Arena tour of the UK, you've got to have something special about you and Akicita doesn't support. The part Dominican and part Native American artist has dropped her 'Future In Disguise' EP and it starts brilliantly with 'You Already Know', a track that slithers and sways in to your consciousness before the assured vocals rise up Phoenix-like on top of a club-ready beat to announce the arrival of a superb artist. The piano based pop-soul of 'Liquor' follows, showing off Akicita's dusky tones that could stand shoulder to shoulder with any of the current crop of pop royalty.

Recent single 'Monster' is a slightly more moody affair with a Bishop Briggs meets Lady Gaga vibe and more than a hint towards her Dominican heritage in the impassioned vocal delivery. On 'Nick Of time' Akicita returns to the piano for a dramatic slow burn of a song that wouldn't be out of place in a film but it would need to feature sweeping vistas and a lot of action on a cliff top somewhere to fit with the grandiose bombast of the song.

Penultimate song 'FWMN' is perhaps my favourite on the album with its sense of revenge and drama dripping out of every pore and a chorus that is delivered through gritted teeth but smiling eyes. The EP closes out on the title track and 'Future In Disguise' bubbles and broods before eventually erupting with beautiful energy like a sunrise breaking over the horizon in an explosion of life and colour. Akicita will win new fans while she's over in the UK but don't expect her rise to stop there, she's one for the big time.
