Long term readers will know that I've been reviewing releases from the singularly excellent Hana Piranha for ten years now so I was somewhat floored to read the blurb for this latest release stating that she had just come out of an abusive relationship. Music is an incredibly personal thing so although I've never met this talented singer-songwriter, I am invested in her success and wellbeing. 'Lorelei' is the unfortunate product of the aforementioned abuse and you can feel the tension in the ominous chug of the drums, bass and guitar before the song comes alive in the chorus. Switching from spoken word to triumphant vocals, Hana Piranha sheds the shackles of her abuser and creates a song that is both deeply personal in content and Muse-esque in its grandiose ambition and size of sound.
