Softcult - See You In The Dark EP (Easy Life Records)
Release Date: Out Now
'See You In The Dark' is the superb new EP from Softcult, one of my favourite finds of 2023 so far so I'd urge you to get on board if you haven't already done so. Things get going with 'Drain' which hits you with a wall of distorted guitars immediately and then soothes you with the twin vocal harmonies that are a theme on this collection. 'Dress' picks up the pace and intensity with a sound somewhere between Berries and My Vitriol as the rhythm section pumps and those guitars wash over you with a relentlessness that you just have to give yourself up to. On 'One Of A Million' the duo take things down a couple of notches and their dreamy vocals are allowed to move around like a low hanging mist in the first light of sunrise.
The second half of the EP kicks off with 'Someone2Me' has a Veruca Salt trippiness to it but that intensity is never far from the surface and when the chorus kicks in with a heavy bass rumble you know you're listening to something special. 'Love Song' feels like one of the spacier tracks from Incubus but with those trademark layered up vocals giving it a shoegazey vibe to die for. Then the EP closes up with 'Spoiled', a track that has the kind of freshness that you get when the sun comes out after a long rain storm before it builds to a triumphant and life affirming climax. Softcult are the kind of band you could easily find yourself obsessing over and, honestly, I don't think there's anything wrong with that so just dive in and fall in love.
