UPSAHL - EP REVIEW

UPSAHL - Sagittarius (Arista Records)

Release Date: Out Now

Technically this came out at the end of 2022 but I couldn't let it go without mentioning it, such is the quality of this latest collection from UPSAHL. The 'Sagittarius' EP opens up with 'Kickflip' which finds our heroine in defiant form (as usual) bringing a brooding energy in the verse before the chorus hits full stride and makes you want to take to the catwalk to strut your finest stuff. Former single 'Into My Body' is still a brilliantly anthemic ode to finding yourself again when you got lost in the BS that swirls around us all from time to time.

On 'Skin Crawl' is, perversely, a lighter and bouncier track but that's what UPSAHL does so well in mixing the uptempo melodies with lyrics that are anything but light. There's an unexpected acoustic opening to 'Antsy' that sounds like Kurt Cobain riffing in his bedroom before the throbbing synth bass and UPSAHL's vocal bring this right up to date. The EP closes out with 'Toast', possibly the most innocent sounding pop song on this collection but it still drives, bounces and surges with energy - a defining a brilliant element of everything UPSAHL does.
