Brooklyn legends the Hold Steady are back with a new single and, soon enough, a new album so let's dive in for a taster shall we? 'Sideways Skull' rattles along with grunge-punk energy underneath a spoken work diatribe that sounds like Lou Reed preaching on a street corner through a crackling megaphone. This is both joyous and bristling as the grungy guitars and drums are soothed in the chorus by a round of 'Ooh-oohs' from the backing vocals and the whole experience rushes past like a courier late for a drop off.
