Larkin Poe - Blood Harmony (Tricki-Woo Records)
Release Date: Out Now
Sisterly duo Larkin Poe swaggered back in to our lives at the end of 2022 with new album 'Blood Harmony' and it is everything we've come to love from the pair. 'Deep Stays Down' gets things going with a swampy vibe and a creeping guitar melody before erupting in to a triumphant beast of a song ready to dance with the devil. Former single 'Bad Spell' continues in the same vein with snarling blues guitars and whip crack drums before 'Georgia Off My Mind' settles down in to a travelling blues sing-a-long that makes you want to climb in to a big rig and set off with the campus set to South. The stomp is back on 'Strike Gold' as the drums hit you right in the gut and there's a great vocal vs guitar call and response thing going on as well.
'Southern Comfort' is so brilliantly steeped in the smell of whiskey that it's a little intoxicating while 'Bolt Cutters & The Family Name' has a white trash, tattooed, cowboy boot wearing vibe that makes you want to line dance on your enemy's grave. Title track 'Blood Harmony' makes the most of a gorgeous guitar sound full of twangy, southern flavours before 'Kick The Blues' brings the slide guitar to play and almost demands that everyone wearing cowboy shirts and boots puts their beer down and takes to the floor. There's a smokey, end of the night country ballad on 'Might As Well Be Me' which shows some rare vulnerability in the vocals but the traditional excellence in the musicianship.
The rock'n'roll show is back on ' Summertime Sunset' and if you don't want head on a roadtrip wearing your aviators by the end of this song then you've got no soul. The album closes out on 'Lips as Cold as Diamond', a cinematic track with a surprisingly atmospheric and brooding tone to end on. Larkin Poe are my go to modern blues band now but when the guitar playing, vocal harmonies, songwriting and lyrics are this good, why would you go anywhere else?
